History of Basketball
Basketball started when a
man named James Naismith from Canada came south to train kids in the Young Men’s
Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. He
wanted to follow his interests in physical education so he expanded on an
assignment to create game that could be played in YMCA gyms during the winter. One
of the first games involved 9 players on each side, trying to toss the soccer
ball into a peach basket nailed to the balconies at the end up of the gym. Whenever
they would make a basket a ladder was brought to retrieve the ball and the game
was paused.
This
new sport first spread across the YMCA but the first public match that was made
in 1892, made the new sport spread quickly across the globe. Basketball’s first
professional league was founded in 1898, which 7 years before that the Nets had
replaced the peach basket.
Basketball is not that different has before
except without the peach baskets, now its hoops.
